Videos

The video playlist below includes various talks on systems thinking, sustainability, concepts in industrial ecology, Internet of Things and cybernetics. Some videos can be rather long, with some talks exceeding an hour in length!

The playlist dates back to the years of the original, now compromised notion of “smart city”. A concept pioneered by tech giants to position hardware, software and related services. Some might recall the spectacular fail of Alphabet’s Sidewalk Labs project in Toronto’s Quayside. Today the tech industry has shifted its strategy to a more discrete but equally pervasive approach epitomized by Palantir’s footprint in public infrastructure, municipal governance, and law enforcement.

Sensor urbanism has given way to platform urbanism. There are alternatives though. The city does not have to be treated as an optimization problem but as a shared ecosystem where technology is subordinate to civic rights and ecological survival. The playlist will therefore contain a mix of that hopefully conveys a gradual evolution across decades.
